When we excavate, we leave baulks between each 10 x 10 meter square within an excavation area. Baulks provide us a vertical record of what we have excavated. At the end of each season, we draw the baulks so they are permanently recorded. Once they are recorded in the database, we can excavate them.

Archaeologists often joke that the best things are found in the baulk. That was certainly true in Grid 23/24 today.

Grid 23/24 volunteers weren’t the only ones finding artifacts today.

Finally, a picture of our dig photographer in action. Field shots, documenting everything from artifacts in the ground, floors and walls and other architectural features to stratigraphic relationships, are an important part of our recording system. Melissa is out in the field every day, running from excavation area to excavation area making sure we get the necessary photographs.
