Weekend and Afternoon Activities

While the volunteers were touring archaeological sites this weekend (Caesarea was a favorite) staff members were getting a tutorial in Roman and Byzantine period pottery. The pottery laid out below was collected during the 2016 survey season.

Each day after excavation, we return to the pottery compound, put our tools away and eat lunch. Afterwards, some volunteers wash pottery, faunal material and lithics, while others mark pottery and assist the various specialists. At 3:30, the day is officially done...at least until the daily lecture at 6:00. With dinner at 7:00 and bedtime usually not long after, the day often passes in a blur.
